Shane L. Barney, M.D.

Dr. Barney is board certified from the American Board of Urology and has a special interest in BPH- and over active bladder-related voiding dysfunction and erectile dysfunction. He is originally from Sheridan, Wyoming. He graduated cum laude from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. He then received his medical degree from FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. He completed a general surgery internship and urology residency at Brooke Army Medical Center and University of Texas Health and Science Center San Antonio respectively. Dr. Barney is an army veteran of 12 years who served as a major in the 286th Medical Detachment of the 32nd Hospital Center. Although he is not a Texas native, he has spent more time here than you can shake a stick at and plans to make San Antonio his permanent home.

Dr. Barney is fluent in Spanish and enjoys Puerto Rican food that his mother-in-law cooks. When not working, he enjoys time with his wife and five children. They enjoy hiking, camping, swimming at the pool, and church.  

Dr. Andrew C. James

Andrew C. James, M.D.

Andrew C. James, M.D. is a urologic oncologist who specializes in the surgical management of urologic malignancies and has specialized training in treating general urologic conditions such as kidney stones and benign prostatic hyperplasia. He specializes in both open and laparoscopic/robotic-assisted surgery for the treatment of kidney, bladder, prostate, testicular, penile and adrenal malignancies. Before joining South Texas Urology Group, he was on faculty at the University of Kentucky where he served as Associate Professor within the Department of Urology and Chief of the Division of Urologic Oncology.
 
Dr. James graduated from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in 2007 and then completed his urology residency in 2012 at the University of Kansas in Kansas City. He subsequently completed his fellowship in Urologic Oncology at the University of Washington in Seattle. He is board certified by the American Board of Urology and a member of the Society of Urologic Oncology and American Society of Clinical Oncology. He is respected nationally as a leader in urologic oncology and has co-authored numerous peer-reviewed articles and served on guideline panels that provide the latest evidence-based recommendations for urologic malignancies.
 

Dr. James believes in working with his patients and their families to develop a patient-centered approach to help them achieve their goals and the best possible outcome in their unique situation. Outside of clinical practice, Dr. James enjoys spending time with his wife and three young children. They love all things outdoors including hiking, playing sports, and exploring new places.

 
Dr. Ian Thompson III

Ian Thompson III, M.D.

Born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, Dr. Ian Thompson III has called San Antonio home for most of his life. A graduate of Keystone school, he completed his undergraduate studies at Texas A&M University and then returned to San Antonio for medical school at UTHSCSA. He completed his general surgery and urologic surgery training at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN and then returned to San Antonio to complete a fellowship in urologic oncology at UTHSCSA. He then took a faculty position at UTHSCSA as Assistant Professor in Urologic Oncology. After serving on faculty for over 2 years, Dr. Thompson founded his private practice, Texas Urology Group. 

Dr. Thompson’s primary focus in his practice is on providing compassionate, quality care to all of his patients.

Outside of clinical medicine, he enjoys spending time with his family. He is a member at First Baptist Church San Antonio (fbcsa.com) and always offers an open invitation for folks to join him downtown for worship on Sunday mornings or to tune in live on TV, Channel 13 (ABC) at 11 am.
